Homocysteine
Mon 19-Feb-2007 15:21

Homocysteine (a sulphur-containing amino acid) is not a common word that one would normally associate with heart disease, but during the last few years studies have shown that patients who display an elevated amount in their blood can be at risk of heart disease, blood clots, strokes and high levels can also affect the elderly with dementia also people who suffer with diabetes. Even those with normal cholesterol levels can have high levels of Homocysteine in their blood.

The good news is that these high levels can be controlled by increasing one's dietary intake of leafy, green vegetables, folic acid and the vitamins B6 and B12. Wholegrain cereals and pulses are also rich in vitamins that help reduce Homocysteine. Folic acid has been noticeably effective too especially for dementia and Alzheimers sufferers in improving memory function.
