The research, reported on the BBC Health News website, looked at changes to the body produced as a result of drinking 5 cups a day of camomile tea produced from the flowers of German camomile (matricaria recutita).
The researchers tested the volunteer's urine daily and revealed increased levels of both glycine which can ease muscle spasms, and the anti-inflammatory hippurate. These levels remained high for two weeks after the volunteers stopped drinking the tea, suggesting possible long lasting affects.
Although this research doesn't prove a link between drinking camomile tea and any beneficial effect on either colds or menstrual pain it does offer pointers that require further investigation.
Camomile tea is widely used in this country for its sedative effect and as an anti-inflammatory and this research may lead to a greater understanding of the reasons why the herb is so beneficial.
